The Kruger National Park, South Africa
Nothing is more exciting than slowly driving along a road in the early morning mist, looking from side to side searching the bush and scanning the horizon; stopping to let the inevitable first sighting of Impala across the road, then to turn off onto a dirt road and there, in front of you, is a pride of lion. You are the first to spot them and you sit and watch for a few brief minutes. You speak in hushed voices to each other for these are truely wild animals. You are in the Kruger National Park, arguably the most famous game reserve in the World.
KRUGER PARK - Accommodation, within the Kruger Park itself, is in several camps which are mainly self-catering. Skukuza, the largest camp in the park, is also the administrative centre. Other camps include, Berg-en-dal - a fairly new camp in a picturesque montane setting approx 12 kilometres from the Malelane entrance gate; Olifants - a modern camp which lies on a cliff overlooking the O
lifants River and Shingwedzi situated in a forest on the banks of the Shingwedzi River. There are also several Bush Camps such as Shimuwini, Bateleur, Sirheni and Jakkalsbessie.
Along the Kruger Park's western boarders lies many of the Private Game Reserves - Singita, Ngala, Djuma, Londolozi, Manyeleti, Sabi Sand, Timbavati and Thornybush. Within these reserves are the Luxury Game Lodges such as Singita's Ebony Lodge, or Djuma's Vuyatela where all your needs are catered for. Early morning game drives in open vehicles take you deep into the Wild African Bush with hopeful sightings of Lion, Elephant, Buffalo, Cheetah and Wildebeast - The Big Five. Many of these reserves, who at one time had electric fences around their properties, have opened up their lands to allow the animals of the Kruger National Park to roam freely.
